Case Study

Weiterbildung eines Redakteurs im Mediensprechen

Initial situation

Mr. Thomas Schneider (name changed) is an experienced editor with over 12 years of professional experience in the editorial department of a large daily newspaper. In addition to writing articles and reports, he is regularly active in editorial conferences and in presenting content to colleagues and external partners. In recent years, his editorial duties have expanded to include media appearances such as podcasts, radio features and video commentaries. Although Thomas is already a confident and experienced speaker, he wanted to develop his media speaking skills in order to be able to use his editorial skills professionally in new media formats.

Goals of the coaching:

Thomas Schneider was faced with a number of specific challenges that differed from his previous speaking practice:

vocal adaptation to media formats

The demands on the voice and speaking style in podcasts, radio and video differ significantly from those in everyday editorial work. Here, the voice often needs to be livelier, more dynamic and adapted to different target groups.

confident handling of technology

The transition from written to spoken communication in the media requires not only linguistic adaptations, but also the confident handling of technical aspects such as microphone control and acoustics.

live performances and immediacy

Unlike in written contributions, media speaking is often live or recorded in one take, which requires a high degree of precision and confidence.

My recommendation:

To get started, I recommend the basic coaching package of 12 individual sessions (60 min), which are arranged every two weeks. This gives you the opportunity to practise on your own in the meantime. The experience can then be supplemented with further individual sessions or with the Coaching Advance package.

Coaching can take place on-site at the Vocal Acting Studio in Munich or online.

It is also possible to conduct the coaching in English.

I would be happy to provide you with an individual offer that optimally reflects your personal wishes.

Methodology

needs analysis and target definition:

First, a detailed analysis of Thomas' existing speaking skills was carried out to identify his strengths and the areas that needed to be developed for media speaking. Together, clear goals were defined for the coaching, which were tailored to his new roles in podcasts, radio reports and videos.

individual coaching sessions:

  • Voice training and speaking technique: Thomas received specific voice training to adapt his voice to the demands of media speaking. This included exercises on voice leading, emphasis, pausing and breathing technique to develop a lively and professional speaking style.
  • Live and recording training: Thomas was prepared for the challenges of live performances and recording in one take. This included dealing with nervousness, maintaining a clear and structured flow of thought and reacting spontaneously to unforeseen situations
  • Speech design In speech design, we worked out which skills can be used to make the idea of the text audible and bring it to the fore, what significance is attached to the exact pairs of opposites high-low, loud-quiet, slow-fast in the design.

practice-oriented exercises:

Io In realistic scenarios that simulated his new media tasks, Thomas was able to apply what he had learned directly. These included recording podcast episodes, voicing radio reports and recording video commentaries.
Each of these practical projects was analyzed in detail to provide targeted feedback and enable continuous improvement.

Results

After several months of intensive coaching, Thomas Schneider showed remarkable progress:

  • Professional media speaking techniques: Thomas has adapted his voice and speaking technique so that he can now perform confidently and professionally in various media formats. His voice is livelier and more dynamic, which is particularly noticeable in podcasts and radio recordings.
  • Confidence in live performances: Thanks to the coaching, Thomas has developed the necessary self-confidence and skills to perform professionally in live situations and when faced with unforeseen challenges. Conclusion:Through the targeted coaching, Thomas Schneider was able to successfully expand his editorial speaking skills into the area of media speaking.

Conclusion

His new skills have enabled him to broaden his professional horizons and act confidently and professionally in podcasts, radio reports and video formats. This case study shows how important it is to learn specific media speaking techniques, even as an experienced speaker, in order to meet the demands of modern media and open up new professional opportunities.
